Change in Small Steps
1, 2, 3, ... Change!
I don't know about you, but when I decide I want to do something, to change something, I want it like .... yesterday. I sign up for that weight loss program that promises a 20-pound weight loss in a week. I add to that the expensive gym membership with all the extra classes, vowing to go seven days a week.
Then, like most others that want that easy and quick fix, I make it one, two, three days, but rarely a week. The lifestyle changes associated with even coming close to achieving the results in the time frame promised are just pie in the sky. They are so unrealistic, the plans are usually abandoned within a week, lumped into the group of failures.
True change takes time, concerted effort, uncomfortableness and steps towards completion. Whether it's weight loss, gaining bodybuilder physic, repairing credit, fixing finances, getting rich schemes, or liposuction to list a few, these quick hacks just don't take us to where we want to go.
Change is never easy, especially when it requires us to dramatically alter the way we’ve become accustomed to living our lives. Leaving our comfort zone, no matter how much we dislike it, requires a combination of bravery and determination, as well as education in that area. If you’re serious about making a long-term change in your life, take these steps to ensure your success
1. Educate Yourself
Knowing exactly what you must do to accomplish your goals will give you the power to make them a reality. Consult a professional, check out books, and google the wealth of information on the internet.
2. Set Reasonable Goals After becoming educated, you will get a realistic picture of how long it will be before you should expect to see results. Having this knowledge upfront will prevent you from having unrealistic expectations or giving up too soon. Learn how to set SMART goals.
3. Plan and Track
If you can't measure it, you can't improve it. This is the time to use those apps and track your progress and use checklists to work towards those daily, weekly and monthly milestones.
4. Just Say No Avoid situations that will prevent you from accomplishing your goals. This is especially important in the beginning before your new way of life comes naturally to you.
5. Pat Yourself on the Back Be proud of yourself for making the decision to improve your quality of life. When you reach important milestones, reward yourself in a way that is in sync with your new lifestyle. Savour the celebrations.
